Official Program Objective: "The JET Programme is a government-sponsored, large-scale international exchange programme. JET began in with the purpose of increasing mutual understanding between the people of Japan and the people of other nations. It aims to promote internationalisation in Japan’s local communities by helping to improve foreign language education and developing international exchange at the community level"

Program Eligibility: A long list of criteria is listed on the site. At the minimum, you need a Bachelor's degree. The list is found here.

Number of Participants: Unknown.

Program Duration: One year, with the potential to renew up to 5 years.

Cost: None. Participants receive 3.6 million yen/year in pay.

Admission Difficulty: Unknown.

Repeat Participants? Yes, but one cannot accumulate more than 5 years as a JET participant.

The Low-Down: This is one of the largest, most formally-established teach-English-in-Asia programs in the world.
